On March 28 Dell announced that they would be selling pre-installed Linux. Dell is now advertising “Dell Linux Desktop” on Google ads. The links only lead to Windows computers currently, but this could be a sign that Linux is coming very soon to Dell computers.

Simple Text-To-Speech in Ubuntu

Windows XP includes a simple text to speech feature. You can do the same thing on the command line with the program Festival, which is in the Ubuntu 6.10 repositories.
apt-get install festival
Once Festival is installed you can start its prompt by typing festival. Use it like this when in Festival’s prompt:

Dell is going to start pre-installing Linux on desktop and laptop computers. So far they have not said when this will happen or what Linux distributions will be installed. They also announced that they support hardware with open source drivers.

ATI Driver Released With New Control Center

The old fireglcontrolpanel has been replaced with the new AMD Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition in the 8.35.5 display driver. Hopefully soon ATI will add support for AIGLX too.
