I ran into an interesting application for Ubuntu today, Brightside. Brightside allows events to be configured to take place when the mouse touches the side or edges of the screen. The folowing actions can be preformed:

  • Fade out volume
  • Prevent screensaver starting
  • Start screensaver and lock screen
  • Various standby events
  • Dim laptop backlight
  • Switch desktops
  • Custom action

Custom actions allow any command to be run, so it should be easy to add a new action. Brightside is in the Ubuntu repositories under the name “brightside”. Once the install finishes the configuration window is added to the System>Preferences menu.
