Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 2 Released
Mozilla has released Firefox 3 Beta 2.
Firefox 3 Beta 2 is a developer preview release of Mozilla’s next generation Firefox browser and is being made available for testing purposes only.
Firefox’s planned integration with Linux and GTK themes is now implemented. The tabs look like GTK native tabs, but they really are just skinned versions of the old ones. The icons are used from the current GTK theme now. I noticed the the tool bar icon to open a new tab is a custom icon, even though there is a nicer default one that Epiphany uses.
I ran Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 through the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark to find if there was a speed advantage. Firefox 3 can run Javascript 14% faster than version 2 on my system:
Firefox 2: 12868.2ms +/- 0.3%
Firefox 3: 9684.8ms +/- 0.3%
Get Firefox 3 Beta 2 from Mozilla’s download page. You can follow my previous how to for beta 1 to install this new version.

For what it’s worth, I ran this against my Firefox and a vanilla profile of
Firefox 2 and it was significantly different:
“TEST COMPARISON FROM TO DETAILS
\=============================================================================
** TOTAL **: 1.29x as fast 47220.2ms +/- 5.0% 36618.2ms +/- 2.2% significant”
I know that most extensions don’t (yet) support Firefox 3, but the results may be skewed unless you’re testing vanilla profiles on each version.

On mine (Dell Latidude D600), Firefox 3b2 is 70% faster! Not bad.
