Google Street View needed Flash Player 10, Ubuntu 8.04 installation of v10 really installs v9 (the package name is "10.0.1.218+really9.0.277.0ubuntu1"), Adobe instructions are incomplete - unhappy me. Firefox shows the current version with "about:plugins" in the address bar. Like Ansi and rinky previously said, I used Synaptic to remove the current player (version 9.0 r277), downloaded the current (10.1 r53) from Adobe, and installed using "sudo dpkg --install /var/cache/apt/archives/install_flash_player_10_linux.deb". Job done. Thanks for the help that I got here.

I found the solution!

After first doing this:

sudo apt-get remove adobe-flashplugin flashplugin-nonfree flashplugin-installer

(in a terminal window)

I saw that I had no flash on the system (and was confusing Shockwave with Flash perhaps?); so I installed it:

sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin flashplugin-nonfree flashplugin-installer

Seeing no difference, I went to Synaptic Manager, and searched for swf, and found "swfdec mozilla" ticked as installed; so I ticked to remove it completely.

After doing so, I restarted FF3.5 and checked the addons, and saw that the previous listing as Shockwave v0.9 r999 had changed to v10.0 r32 (looking not only correct, but a lot less like an error version display).

Went to iplayer... clicked on an Attenborough documentary - sorted!

I realise this isn't a support page, but I thought as I'd landed here whilst looking for a solution, it does no harm to leave a solution here for anyone else to benefit from.
